Here comes the Glass City Marathon!

Posted in Blog

In a little over a week, thousands of runners will converge at The University of Toledo for the 2014 Medical Mutual Glass City Marathon.

My first 5k was the Glass City Marathon two years ago with my dad, who is an avid runner. I’m not sure how he convinced me to do it, but even as someone who never runs I had a lot of fun spending time with my dad.

I would encourage everyone, runner or not, to participate in the event — even with minimal training I had a blast. The expo before the race offers a lot of great information about other races in the Toledo area as well as gear for running. After the race, runners hang out and drink beer and eat pizza. What could be better than that?

My friend Amelia is a passionate runner who has participated in the GCM, and she always talks about how great it feels to finish a race.

“Preparing for a marathon takes time, passion, and commitment,” she said. “I have been running for the past eight years of my life and have completed numerous half marathons and three full marathons. When I first started it was all about how fast I could run, but it has now turned into a passion for me. It is no longer about my time, but more just finishing the race and the pride I feel whenever I finish.”

If you’d like to register, registration is open until April 26, though some events are sold out. Prices for the marathon and 5k increase after April 25. For more information on the race and registration, visit the race website. Spectators also are welcome along the 5k course and in the Glass Bowl stadium, where runners will finish their races.

“When you have committed to finish the race, there is not a better feeling in the world when you cross that finish line,” Amelia said. “There are so many times during a race that you may think you can't finish. But that feeling when you cross the finish line and they are putting a medal around your neck, in that moment it is all worth it. And you feel like you can accomplish anything.”

This year there also are a few ambassadors to the race who have running blogs you should check out: Amanda Kessler, from Perrysburg, Ohio; Emily Nickles, a Toledo native from Blue Ash, Ohio; Emily Baumgartner, a Toledo native from Tallmadge, Ohio; Christian Heller, from Hudson, Ohio, and Tom Chaney, from Plymouth, Michigan.
