If you’re the parent of a school-age child, it’s time once again to compile that all-important back-to-school checklist to ensure he or she isn’t lacking any vital supplies as the new academic year gets underway. But as you jot down items such as pens, pencils, markers, scissors, crayons, notebooks, folders, and new gym shoes, don’t forget to add a comprehensive eye exam to the list.

Parents: have your kids had their back-to-school vaccines and checkups?

When preparing for the start of another school year, parents have a lot to do and a lot on their minds—checklists of school supplies to fulfill, new clothing to buy, parents’ nights to attend, etc. Not to mention, there’s the challenge of weaning kids off their summertime habits (think: sleeping in, staying up late, and more or less spending all the time in between however they please) so they’re ready for the more regimented schedule that school imposes.

As my children enter the world of youth sports, I am now faced with seeing sports from the perspective of a parent versus the one I have been used to for over 20 years—that of a coach. Now, I would be lying if I did not say that I have found this to be a bit challenging at times. However, in the short period of time, I have also found it to be very rewarding.
