Each year, U.S. News & World Report ranks our nation’s hospitals based on a variety of factors, including medical outcomes, patient experience, nurse-to-patient ratios, and many others. Designed to give patients additional information to consider in determining where to receive care, the rankings were generated by evaluating data on nearly 5,000 hospitals in 16 adult medical specialties, 10 adult procedures or conditions, and 10 pediatric specialties. The organization also ranks hospitals in each state and nearly 100 metro areas with the goal of making it easy for everyone to find excellent medical care close to home.

The 2020 rankings should give Toledo-area residents confidence in the fact that high-quality, leading-edge healthcare services are available here in the local community. ProMedica Toledo Hospital has earned the ranking of number one hospital in the Toledo area and number 11 in the state of Ohio. Furthermore, ProMedica Toledo Hospital has been ranked “high performing” in seven out of 10 adult procedures, including heart failure, abdominal aortic aneurysm repair, aortic valve surgery, heart bypass surgery, knee replacement, hip replacement, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Hospitals designated as “high performing” are considered to be in the top 10 to 20 percent in their respective categories.

“We’re thrilled to receive this recognition, which we owe to our highly trained and knowledgeable medical staff and our dedicated employees,” states Dawn Buskey, president of ProMedica Acute Care Hospitals. “This honor also clearly demonstrates that area residents don’t need to look outside our community for state-of-the-art care. They can get it right here at home.”

Buskey explains that in determining rankings, U.S. News & World Report uses a blended model that looks at a variety of different areas. For example, medical outcomes are evaluated based on data reported by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, while patient experiences are gauged through Press Ganey surveys, which ProMedica Toledo Hospital administers to all patients in order to gather constructive feedback and identify areas for follow-up and improvement.

Four of the seven procedures for which ProMedica Toledo Hospital has been ranked “high performing” are in the category of cardiac and heart surgery. “This isn’t surprising considering our team consists of highly qualified cardiac specialists, including the most experienced cardiothoracic surgeons in Northwest Ohio, who perform more than 900 surgeries every year,” Buskey states.

The “high performing” rankings for knee and hip replacement also come as no surprise because ProMedica Wildwood Orthopaedic and Spine Hospital, a division of ProMedica Toledo Hospital, is the region’s only hospital devoted solely to orthopaedic care and is Joint Commission certified in total hip and total knee replacement. The orthopaedic medical staff there boasts an exceptional level of experience in these procedures, performing more than 12,000 surgeries each year.

Buskey notes that the exceptional U.S. News & World Report rankings aren’t the only honors ProMedica Toledo Hospital has received this year. In fact, the hospital has also earned a place on Healthgrades’ 2020 list of America’s 50 Best Hospitals, placing the facility in the top 1 percent of hospitals in the nation for consistently providing overall clinical excellence across a broad spectrum of conditions and procedures year over year. “This is just one more testament to the exceptional clinical outcomes we achieve thanks to the high-quality medical care team we have here,” she says.
